Symbol Set
I’m exploring a couple different directions for my symbol set for my visual component of the thesis. One option would be to use geometric shapes (with some sort of kinetic attribute) or the other I thought about would be to base the symbol set on early alphabets, in this case the Phoenician alphabet. The shapes will be attached to some sort of sound (see some sound and loop examples here) and while the loops are not complex, they could still be considered more complex than simple geometric shapes. For this reason, I explored the Phoenician alphabet. Like metaphoric design, early alphabets and hieroglyphs are based on a semiotic relationship to an object. If I were to go the direction of the early alphabet as my symbol set, the original meaning of each individual shape would not matter in my design. Here is an example of a few characters:
However, simple kinetic shapes could also work well due to it’s simplicity and ability to be organized together to create larger designs (which would be done through the user’s interaction).
